Working with kids & teens

Therapy with children usually occurs with frequent parental input (e.g., parent appointments, parents attending sessions), and input from other significant others in the child's life (e.g., teachers) if appropriate. In some cases, parents may have more contact with me than the child (e.g., for young children).

When working with teenagers, the involvement of others is guided by the young person to give them a sense of ownership in therapy and confidence in the confidentiality I promise. I do encourage family involvement as I know the benefits this can have, but I never discuss anything without the young person's permission.

“I work to find real world solutions. Breathing exercises and mindfulness can be great, but I've heard enough groans and seen enough eye rolls from my teenage clients to know that the advice and recommendations given by therapists can sometimes feel useless in the real world. We will work together to find things that actually work for you and your child.”
